JailbreakMe 2.0

JailbreakMe 2.0

JailbreakMe 2.0 is a website that will jailbreak Apple i-devices simply by visiting http://www.jailbreakme.com from within the i-device’s mobile version of Safari.

One of the very first methods developed for users to “jailbreak” the original iPhone was via a website called JailbreakMe. Those who owned the iPhone could simply visit this website right from the iPhone mobile version of Safari and the website would jailbreak the iPhone, allowing owners to install unofficial applications and utilities that Apple will not allow into the official App Store. One such utility, for example, is capable of software unlocking the iPhone, ie allowing it work on other mobile service carriers.

This jailbreak service worked for a short period of time before Apple was able to identify the mobile Safari loophole and block it.

While other methods of jailbreaking have since then been released, JailbreakMe 2.0 is now capable of jailbreaking any iOS device (iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads) that runs either iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, or 3.1.2.

MagicPrefs for Magic Mouse (Mac OS X only)

MagicPrefs for Magic Mouse (Mac OS X only)

I bought a Magic Mouse almost as soon as it came out and, as much as I loved the touch interface, thought it was a bit limited in terms of functionality. The older Mighty Mouse had side buttons and a middle click button which allowed me to trigger Mac OS X features like Expose, Spaces, or Dashboard. These buttons were gone in the Magic Mouse to make room for the beautiful design and large touch surface.

MagicPrefs is a very small and lightweight app that runs in the background and takes full advantage of the Magic Mouse’s touch surface. It gives full control over touch gestures and empowers the Magic Mouse with features found on the newer MacBook touchpads and the iPhone.

WiFi in Your Car (and Everywhere Else)

WiFi in Your Car (and Everywhere Else)

I initially wrote this post on my personal blog as a reply to someone who asked for an easy and slightly inexpensive way to get WiFi in their car without buying a dedicated 3G WiFi router.

Portable 3G WiFi routers are slowly becoming more popular. But most people who may want internet access everywhere may already have USB 3G modems, which may actually eliminate the need for a dedicated 3G WiFi router. Let me explain:

About 6 months ago, I bought a USB 3G modem to use with my MacBook and netbook. The little guy was great and gave me internet access nearly everywhere when plugged into either computer. The 3G modem combined with the minuteness of my netbook was just an awesome and powerful mobile internet device.

One time, however, while I was on the commute to work with a couple for friends, they wanted to use my 3G modem as well. I couldn’t just give them my modem because I was actually doing work but I also wanted to share my connection with them. So, the genius that I am (not really), I remembered Mac OS X has built-in internet sharing! Windows has a similar feature as well called ad-hoc networking.

Anyway, with the 3G modem and Mac OS X’s internet sharing, my netbook basically became a portable WiFi router eliminating the need for me to have to buy a dedicated 3G WiFi router.

Scanning in Windows Vista

Scanning in Windows Vista

A common question we are asked is how do I scan a document when using Vista?

If you have a scanner, either combined with your printer or a standalone scanner the steps to scan a document are:

Step 1: Place the document to be scanned faced down on the scanner.

Step 2: Click Start, select All Programs and then Windows Photo Gallery.

Step 3: Click File and then select Import from Camera or Scanner. A new window will open with your printer/scanner will be highlighted in the window – just click the Import button.

Step 4: Another new window will open where you can change the quality settings of the scan. Setting the Resolution higher increases the quality but remember the larger the file. Then click the Scan button

Step 5: When the scan is finished a small window opens in the bottom right hand corner, click Import.

Step 6: By default the scanned document is now stored in your Pictures folder under the days date.
